Nine Arrested in Nakuru as Police Target Phone Snatching Syndicates

Police in Nakuru County have arrested nine people during a targeted operation aimed at dismantling networks involved in mobile phone snatching and the trade of stolen devices.

The intelligence-led operation, carried out by officers from the National Police Service (NPS), took place at Shoppers Paradise and in the Sokoni area of Kaptembwa after authorities received reports about individuals suspected of dealing in stolen phones.

According to police, the crackdown was intended to break up criminal groups involved in both the theft of mobile phones and the illegal resale or modification of the devices.

“Nine suspects were arrested with several assorted mobile phones and electronic equipment believed to be used for flashing and altering mobile phone IMEI numbers,” the NPS said in a statement.

During the operation, officers also recovered sixteen rolls of bhang from the suspects.

Police noted that crimes such as phone snatching often have wider consequences beyond the loss of the device, as victims may also lose access to important communication, personal information, and feel unsafe in public spaces.

The NPS said the arrests demonstrate continued efforts by law enforcement to disrupt criminal activities linked to petty theft and protect the public.

Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to tackling such offences through intelligence gathering, coordinated police operations, and collaboration with local communities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
