Nigerian Connected to Roysambu Airbnb Murder Arrested at JKIA While Trying to Escape

Kasarani detectives in Nairobi County have apprehended a foreign national at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on suspicion of involvement in the murder of a 20-year-old woman whose mutilated body was discovered in a residence in the Roysambu area.

The individual, traveling with a Mozambican passport, was stopped before boarding a plane, interrogated at the airport, and subsequently transferred to Kasarani Police Station pending identification.

Sources close to the investigation revealed that the suspect was detained after arousing suspicion. However, it is too early to confirm if the man in police custody is the individual captured on CCTV last Saturday picking up the keys to the house where the girl was allegedly killed, with her body parts found in paper bags.

Detectives are also on the lookout for the girl’s severed head, as well as her personal belongings, including clothes and a mobile phone, which are still missing.

The victim, a university student whose body was positively identified by family members on Monday, had traveled from Athi River to Roysambu to have dinner with the alleged perpetrator.

The gruesome murder has prompted condemnation from the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), urging the government to safeguard women and girls amid rising cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). FIDA highlighted the need for thorough investigations by security agencies into the circumstances surrounding the killings, emphasizing the State’s responsibility to protect women and girls from such violence.

FIDA Vice Chair Christine Kung’u expressed concern about the longstanding failure of the state to protect women and girls from this type of violence, often occurring in private spaces by perpetrators known to the victims.

FIDA CEO Anne Ireri added: “If we could tighten measures, coupled with databases of sexual violators within the law, then it is easier to be able to track a perpetrator.”

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, responsible for the registration and licensing of facilities offering private accommodation, affirmed that the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) would enforce compliance and take legal action against any violations. He urged the public to verify the registration and license status of facilities to ensure adherence to government directives, mentioning a comprehensive review of current TRA regulations to strengthen partnerships with accommodation providers.
