Naivasha Hospital Under Fire After 8-Month-Old’s Death

An eight-month-old infant passed away at Naivasha Hospital amidst allegations of medical negligence, prompting scrutiny of the hospital’s practices. The family reported that the child was admitted on Friday night due to breathing difficulties.

According to the infant’s uncle, Sam Maina, the child initially received oxygen therapy and her condition stabilized, even allowing for breastfeeding. However, a critical turn occurred during a shift change when the oxygen ventilator was purportedly disconnected, resulting in a recurrence of breathing complications and ultimately, the infant’s demise around 6:30 pm.

The child’s mother, Beth Njoroge, held the medical staff responsible for her baby’s death, claiming they disregarded her pleas during the emergency. She accused them of negligence, alleging delays in attending to the infant’s needs and even sending her to the lab without proper assessment.

Dr. Bernard Warui, the Superintendent in charge, urged patience as investigations commenced to determine the cause of death and unravel the events leading up to the tragedy.

The incident incited protests from outraged locals who disrupted hospital services in demand for justice, leading to clashes with hospital management and the deployment of anti-riot police. Several journalists were reportedly assaulted amid the chaos.

This occurrence follows a recent death of a 40-year-old man at the same facility, which previously saw clashes between family members and hospital staff. Additionally, last year, the Nakuru County Assembly committee on health raised concerns over multiple newborn deaths attributed to malfunctioning incubators in the maternity wing.
