Five individuals lost their lives, while nine others sustained injuries in a tragic accident that occurred at Mahiga Meeru area along the Nyahururu-Nyeri road on Saturday evening.
The victims, including a driver and women from St. Peters Gaitega of the Cathedral Parish of the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a, were returning home after participating in a National prayer meeting at the Subukia’s Marian Shrine the previous evening, alongside thousands of members of the Catholic Women Association (CWA).
Of the survivors, three were rushed to Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital for treatment. Two were subsequently discharged, while one remains hospitalized, nursing head injuries. The bodies of the four deceased individuals were taken to the Nyahururu County Hospital Mortuary.
Additional survivors were transported to various hospitals in Nyeri County for medical attention.
Lucy Wanjiku and Jecinta Njeri, among those who survived, recounted the harrowing experience, indicating that the driver of the 14-seater vehicle attempted to evade a collision with an oncoming trailer, which ultimately proved unsuccessful.
According to their recollection, the trailer seemed to have malfunctioned, losing control before colliding with their vehicle.
Nyandarua County Women’s Representative, Faith Gitau, who aided the survivors, expressed her heartfelt condolences to the victims and urged strength for their grieving families.
