Pastor Ng’ang’a’s Church Not Closed, Nairobi Official Clarifies

Environment Chief Officer Geoferry Mosiria has refuted reports claiming that Neno Evangelism Centre, led by Apostle James Maina Ng’ang’a, was shut down over a KSh10 million land rate debt.

Taking to his X account, Mosiria clarified that the county’s aim is not to hinder religious activities but to pursue unpaid dues.

“Our mandate isn’t to halt the gospel—it’s to recover outstanding county payments,” he said.

Mosiria further revealed that the church’s land rate had since been waived, and a hotel run by the ministry had cleared its Unified Business Permit fee. He confirmed that the church is now fully cleared to continue its operations.

“We’re happy to report the land rate issue has been waived, and the hotel has settled its business permit. The church is free to operate,” he said.

Mosiria reaffirmed the county’s commitment to working cooperatively with Nairobi residents and institutions.

This comes just days after Mosiria made headlines for giving the church a three-day ultimatum to pay the land rate arrears, warning that non-compliant facilities risked closure.

“This KSh10 million debt must be cleared. The county provides essential services that need funding,” he said on May 20, 2025, outside the Neno Evangelism Centre.

Pastor Ng’ang’a responded by challenging the legality of the county’s demand, stating that a previous directive by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko exempted churches and mosques from paying land rates.

Sonko has since confirmed the existence of the exemption, adding that it would need to be officially revoked before any such claims can be enforced.
