Authorities in Costa Rica have apprehended a black-and-white cat that was being used to smuggle drugs into Pococí Prison.
Nicknamed “Narcomichi” by amused internet users, the cat was noticed behaving strangely near a grassy area close to the prison perimeter on May 6, 2025. Alert prison guards moved in and captured the animal, discovering two packages taped securely to its body.
Inside the taped bundles were around 236 grams of marijuana, 68 grams of heroin, and two sheets of rolling paper.
According to Channel 4 News, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Justice posted details of the bizarre incident on Facebook, where the story quickly went viral—prompting widespread amusement and disbelief.
A prison tower guard first noticed the suspicious feline activity and alerted others, leading to a swift operation that prevented the drugs from reaching inmates.
In video footage shared online, officials are seen carefully removing the tape from the calm, compliant cat, making the scene even more surreal.
Authorities have launched an investigation to identify who trained and sent the cat, believing it was part of a targeted drug delivery operation inside the prison.
While animals have been used in drug smuggling before, employing a domestic cat in such a scheme is highly uncommon and has stirred international interest.
The cat was handed over to Costa Rica’s National Animal Health Service (SENASA) for medical evaluation and care. Officials emphasized that the feline was not at fault but a victim of exploitation by criminals.
Online reactions ranged from humorous to concerned. “The not-so purrfect crime,” joked one commenter. Others highlighted the ethical issues of using animals in smuggling operations, referencing past instances involving dogs and goats.
