Mudavadi: Kenyan Delegation to Addis Self-Funded

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has clarified that the Kenyan delegation in Ethiopia for the African Union Commission (AUC) elections is self-funded.

Speaking to the media in Addis Ababa, Mudavadi dismissed claims that the large delegation, present to support Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the AUC chair, is being funded by the government.

Mudavadi, who also serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, explained that many of those attending had done so voluntarily and at their own expense.

“People have been asking about the size of the Kenyan delegation. The size is standard, as it is usually led by the President in summits like this,” he remarked.

He emphasized the strong sense of patriotism among those supporting Raila’s bid, stating that many Kenyans traveled to Addis Ababa out of personal commitment.

“Many Kenyans have come here at their own expense to show solidarity and patriotism. Some even came by bus, thanks to our shared borders. We appreciate them,” he added.

Mudavadi expressed confidence in Raila’s chances of winning the seat, citing his extensive campaigning across Africa and the full backing from President William Ruto. He also mentioned the contributions of ambassadors and his role as CS for Foreign Affairs.

The announcement of several lawmakers planning to join the delegation sparked online controversy.

Reports suggest that around 100 Members of Parliament and top government officials will be heading to Addis Ababa to show their support for Raila. Additionally, governors from different political affiliations are also expected to attend the vote.

Raila will be competing against Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, and Madagascar’s former Foreign Minister, Richard Randriamandrato, in the elections.

Africa’s heads of state are set to select Moussa Faki Mahamat’s successor during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government, scheduled for February 15 and 16 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
