Ambira Boys School: Parents Refuse to Pay Ksh.33,000 Fine

A dispute is emerging at Ambira Boys Senior School in Ugunja Sub-county after parents of Grade 10 students moved to court over a Ksh.33,000 damage surcharge imposed following recent student unrest at the institution.

The levy was introduced after violent protests on May 19, 2026, which resulted in extensive destruction of school property, including the principal’s office, dormitories and computer laboratories. The unrest forced the school to close indefinitely.

Represented by J.C. Mwangi & Co. Advocates, the parents have formally written to Chief Principal Boaz Adit, questioning the legality and justification of the charge.

In a demand letter dated June 1, the parents argue that the school is subjecting their children to unlawful collective punishment by requiring all Grade 10 students to contribute towards repairs.

They claim that during a stakeholders’ meeting held on May 21, school administrators assured parents that Grade 10 learners would not be required to bear any repair costs because they were not involved in the unrest. The parents are now seeking an explanation for the apparent change in position.

The legal notice requires the school administration to provide a detailed justification for the Ksh.33,000 levy, including an itemised breakdown of the damages incurred and the method used to calculate the amount charged to each student.

Additionally, the parents are demanding evidence linking Grade 10 students directly to the destruction of school property, as well as a report on personal belongings allegedly lost by students during the hurried evacuation that followed the disturbances.

The parents further contend that the unrest stemmed from unresolved student welfare concerns and broader disciplinary challenges, which they say the school administration failed to adequately address.

With students already missing significant learning time due to the prolonged closure, the parents maintain that they will not make any payments until the school demonstrates transparency, fairness and accountability regarding the levy.
