Stolen Police Pistol Found Hidden in Nairobi Supermarket Bags

A police officer’s missing firearm, which had raised concerns over potential criminal use, has been recovered after being discovered in a supermarket luggage storage area in Nairobi.

The loaded Ceska pistol was found hidden inside a Carrefour-branded carrier bag during an intelligence-led operation conducted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The discovery was made on Tuesday morning at Development House along Moi Avenue, ending a week-long search for the weapon.

Investigators said the firearm had been carefully concealed, with the suspect wrapping it in additional red and blue carrier bags before placing it among stored luggage in the supermarket’s holding section alongside groceries.

Police confirmed that the weapon was recovered intact in its holster, with 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition still in the magazine, while two rounds were missing from the original count of 15.

Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the suspect responsible for stealing and abandoning the firearm.

The officer, a sergeant attached to the elite Security of Government Buildings (SGB) VIP unit and assigned to a former Member of Parliament, reported that the pistol went missing after he visited a barber shop and spa along Moktar Daddah Street.

According to investigators, the officer had gone to the facility on May 21 at around 4pm for a massage session. He reportedly placed his Ceska pistol under a cushion before the treatment began.

He later felt unwell and fell asleep at the spa, only to wake up around 11pm and realize that his firearm was missing.

He reported the matter on May 25 after an unsuccessful search.

Police officers later visited the scene and recorded statements from staff as investigations intensified, amid fears that the missing firearm could be used to commit serious crimes.

Security agencies also reviewed CCTV footage from both the spa and the supermarket, which helped trace the movement of a suspect seen wearing a cap and attempting to conceal their identity while accessing the luggage storage area.

The motive behind the theft remains unclear as detectives continue to pursue leads in the case.
