Azimio MPs staged a walkout after Speaker Moses Wetangula declared Kenya Kwanza as the majority side in the National Assembly on Wednesday.

The lawmakers, led by Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, disagreed with the Speaker’s ruling and stated they would address the media later.
“We’re here to inform you that the Speaker has made a ruling regarding the majority and minority leadership in the House,” Junet said.
“As you know, the court ruled that Kenya Kwanza is not the majority party in Parliament. But here in Kenya, the majority or minority party is determined by defections, where people switch parties and add to the numbers of the new party without consulting the voters who elected them.”
Junet also claimed there were inconsistencies in the Speaker’s ruling.
“Earlier, he ruled that the 14 members from other parties who had joined Kenya Kwanza were part of that coalition. Now, he’s saying they don’t belong to any party, as if they’re in limbo. This shows how the numbers are being manipulated to make a certain group the majority,” he said.
“Recently, he ruled that Jubilee was not part of Azimio, but today he’s confirmed that Jubilee is part of Azimio.”
Junet concluded that the Speaker’s decision regarding the House leadership would be challenged in court.
The Speaker stated that Azimio has 154 MPs, while Kenya Kwanza has 165 in the House.
“Therefore, Kenya Kwanza is the majority and Azimio is the minority. The leadership of the House remains unchanged,” the Speaker concluded.
