Moses Wetang’ula, the Speaker of the National Assembly, has affirmed that Kenya Kwanza holds the majority in Parliament, following a discussion about the majority and minority positions in the National Assembly.

He stated that Kenya Kwanza has 165 Members of Parliament, while Azimio has 154. The Speaker confirmed that based on this, Kenya Kwanza is the majority, while Azimio is the minority, and the leadership of the House remains unchanged.
Wetang’ula clarified that the court had not declared any party as the majority or minority, nor had it declared the leader of either group.
On February 7, the High Court criticized Wetang’ula’s earlier declaration of Kenya Kwanza as the majority party. The Speaker explained that Azimio, registered in April 2022, includes 21 parties, such as Jubilee, ODM, Wiper, Kanu, and others. Kenya Kwanza, formed on June 3, 2022, includes 11 parties, including UDA, Amani National Congress, and others.
He noted that Kenya Kwanza entered a post-election coalition agreement on September 5, 2022, with four additional parties. On October 6, 2022, Wetang’ula ruled that Kenya Kwanza was the majority coalition after 14 MPs from Azimio joined the ruling coalition, tipping the balance in favor of Kenya Kwanza.
However, a High Court ruling later found that Wetang’ula had violated the Constitution in making the determination and overturned his decision, declaring that he had no valid basis for the reassignments.
