MP Kihara Accuses UDA Leaders of Fueling Tribal Narrative

Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara has accused President William Ruto and UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar of promoting ethnic divisions ahead of the 2027 General Election, warning that such remarks could heighten political tensions in the country.

Speaking to the press in Naivasha on Saturday, Kihara claimed the two leaders were advancing an anti-Kikuyu narrative, which she said poses a threat to national unity.

She criticised President Ruto’s comments about the Mt Kenya region, arguing that voters there supported him in 2022 and deserve accountability over unfulfilled campaign promises.

Kihara said it was wrong for the President to respond to criticism by using ethnic rhetoric, insisting that leaders must be held accountable for their commitments.

She also dismissed allegations linking former President Mwai Kibaki to the introduction of tribalism in government, describing them as unfounded.

The MP further faulted Mt Kenya leaders serving in government for remaining silent on alleged hate speech, and questioned the effectiveness of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), saying it lacks sufficient leadership capacity.

She additionally alleged that recent protests in parts of Mt Kenya over fuel price increases, during which property was destroyed, were orchestrated to portray the community negatively.

Kihara maintained that Kenyan voters are politically aware and will not be swayed by ethnic politics, saying attempts at manipulation will fail.
