Missing Kenyan activist Mwabili Mwagodi found in Diani, rushed to hospital

Kenyan activist Mwabili Mwagodi, whose disappearance had sparked concern for days, has been located in Diani and taken to hospital for medical examination.

According to Hussein Khalid, CEO of Vocal Africa, Mwagodi is now in the care of officials from the organisation and human rights lobby group MUHURI. He was taken to Pandya Hospital in Mombasa for a medical check-up and will later be flown to Nairobi to reunite with his family.

Khalid revealed that Mwagodi was abandoned in a thicket in Kinondo, Kwale County, around 3 a.m., and walked approximately three kilometres to Diani. There, he managed to contact his family, who in turn alerted Vocal Africa, leading to his rescue.

“After reaching Diani, Mwabili went to the police station on his own, but surprisingly, officers tried to detain him. Our team intervened and secured his release,” Khalid stated.

Mwagodi, who has been actively working in Tanzania, was allegedly abducted there. His sister, Isabella Kituri, said he vanished in the neighbouring country and that efforts by his employer to report him missing were initially rejected by Tanzanian police, who claimed they had to wait 24 hours before filing a report.

“Mwabili, known for his outspoken views against political fundraising in churches, was abducted on Wednesday in Tanzania,” Kituri said.

The family, growing increasingly anxious, had on Saturday appealed to both Kenyan and Tanzanian authorities to account for his whereabouts after four days of silence.

According to witnesses, the activist was taken by force around 10 p.m. on July 23 near Amani Beach Hotel in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, where he works. Armed men reportedly intercepted him and his driver, forcibly placing him into a vehicle and driving off.

His phone was switched off shortly after the incident, and no further contact was made. The family also noted that his vehicle was left behind and claimed that CCTV footage from the area was taken by Tanzanian authorities, hampering investigations.
