Migori: County MCA Donates Sanitary Towels To Over 800 Schoolgirls

More than 800 schoolgirls in God Jope Ward, Suna East Constituency of Migori County have received a generous donation of sanitary towels and undergarments to address teenage pregnancy.

The donation, provided by Charles Koyoo, the local Member of County Assembly (MCA), aims to protect the girls from being enticed by young men into unplanned sexual activities with the promise of material goods in return.

Koyoo emphasized that this initiative is essential for safeguarding the girls and preventing them from vulnerable situations. Additionally, he highlighted that the exercise seeks to assist parents who may struggle to provide basic and essential items for their daughters.

The MCA expressed concern about the exposure of young girls to potential risks, leaving them susceptible to the advances of predatory individuals. He noted that the rise in teenage pregnancies, early marriages, and immoral behavior among schoolgirls in the ward and the county is attributed to widespread poverty, necessitating urgent and practical interventions to address the issue.

Koyoo attributed the economic challenges in the region to the collapse of tobacco and sugarcane industries, impacting parents’ ability to support their families. He pledged to continue providing sanitary towels every term to ensure the safety and uninterrupted education of the girls pursuing their careers.

The move received appreciation from the schoolgirls, who acknowledged the difficulties they face in accessing such necessities. Verah Aoko, one of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude, highlighting the financial constraints faced by some parents.

Mary Atieno, a parent, praised the MCA’s compassionate gesture and advised the girls not to be swayed by young men offering such items. The donations included three pairs of underwear pants, a pair of biker pants, and three sanitary pads for each of the 863 adolescent girls across the ward.
