“Unfortunately, this is my last dance [at AFCON], but I will be the 12th man to support them,” Mané said, signaling that while he may no longer play at the tournament, his support for the Lions of Teranga will remain strong.

Mané, who played a key leadership role throughout the tournament, also highlighted the need for better organisation and officiating in African football, particularly after the chaotic scenes in the final. Despite the challenges, he remained optimistic about the growth of the game on the continent.

“African football deserves more than this,” he said, praising the progress being made and noting that the quality, competitiveness, and global recognition of African football have improved significantly in recent years. He added that more African players are now thriving at the highest levels worldwide, raising the profile of the sport back home.

Mané’s leadership was widely praised during the turbulent AFCON final. When tempers flared after a controversial penalty in favour of hosts Morocco, he emerged as a calming presence for Senegal.

While some teammates confronted officials or headed to the tunnel in protest, Mané stayed behind, urging restraint and composure. Television footage later captured him gesturing emphatically to his teammates, preventing further escalation and keeping the team focused on the match.

His guidance proved crucial when Senegal returned to the pitch, allowing goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to make a decisive save from Brahim Diaz’s penalty — a moment that shifted momentum in Senegal’s favour.

Beyond the final, Mané’s influence throughout the tournament and during high-pressure moments earned widespread praise from fans, pundits, and teammates, with many celebrating him as the embodiment of leadership on Africa’s biggest stage.
