In an effort to enforce safety regulations, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) conducted a crackdown on Sunday in Thika, Kiambu County, resulting in the arrest of passengers found traveling in overloaded public service vehicles.
NTSA, in a communication posted on X, urged motorists to refrain from boarding overloaded vehicles to avoid disruptions.

“To prevent any inconvenience, we urge passengers not to board vehicles that exceed their passenger capacity,” stated the transport and safety authority.
Video footage shared by NTSA depicted passengers being disembarked from matatus, under the supervision of law enforcement officers, and escorted to awaiting police vehicles for transportation to the police station.
This action follows NTSA’s recent seizure of a 14-seater matatu discovered carrying 31 students from Tharaka Nithi County on Saturday. The driver managed to evade arrest, leaving the students stranded in the vehicle.

Additionally, NTSA has been taking action against pedestrians who fail to utilize designated walkways and footbridges while crossing roads in Nairobi, with several arrests reported on Tuesday.
The government’s heightened efforts to address the escalating rate of road accidents in Kenya have led to Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announcing new measures. These measures include the reinstatement of NTSA officers to patrol the roads, effective March 19.
