Kenyan Passport Weakens, Drops Two Spots in Latest Global Ranking

Kenya’s passport has fallen two positions in the latest Henley Passport Index, now ranking 69th worldwide, down from 67th in the previous year.

The index, compiled by London-based global citizenship advisory firm Henley & Partners, shows that Kenyan passport holders can currently access 71 destinations either visa-free or with a visa on arrival.

The Henley Passport Index assesses 199 passports using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranking them based on the number of destinations accessible without prior visa arrangements.

Several African countries outranked Kenya in the 2025 edition, including Seychelles (25th), Mauritius (29th), South Africa (48th), Botswana (59th), Namibia (63rd), Lesotho (65th), Eswatini (66th), and both Malawi and Morocco, which tied at 67th place.

The report reflects shifting patterns in global mobility, influenced by evolving diplomatic ties, security considerations, and economic factors.

“The consolidation we’re seeing at the top underscores that access is earned and must be maintained through active and strategic diplomacy,” said Henley & Partners Chairman Christian Kaelin, the originator of the passport index concept.

He noted that while some countries are expanding travel access through bilateral deals, others are seeing declines due to shifting geopolitical conditions.

Despite the slight drop, Kenya remains among Africa’s top 10 most powerful passports, ranking ninth on the continent and leading within the East African region.

Island nations continue to dominate the continent’s rankings, with Seychelles and Mauritius offering access to more than 150 destinations without prior visas.

The index notes that ranking changes are often driven by small policy adjustments rather than major shifts in a country’s global standing.

Kenya’s drop in the rankings highlights the need for ongoing diplomatic efforts and the strengthening of mutual visa agreements to maintain and improve mobility.
