The telco credits this growth to a year-long customer engagement initiative that focused on expanding services, offering rewards, and enhancing user experiences across the country.

From promotions to upgrades on its digital platforms, Safaricom says these efforts have reinforced its role as a key enabler of connectivity in Kenya.

“We are humbled by the confidence over 50 million Kenyans have shown in us. This achievement represents the strong bond we’ve built over the past 25 years,” said Safaricom Group CEO Peter Ndegwa.

“As we approach our silver jubilee, we renew our commitment to being a force for good and innovating for our customers’ future.”

Ndegwa highlighted the company’s growth from just 17,000 users in 2000 to its current customer base as evidence of its impact on Kenya’s digital and financial development.

Safaricom’s mobile money service, M-PESA, has transformed into a comprehensive digital ecosystem, while continued investment in 3G, 4G, and now 5G technology has reshaped how Kenyans connect, work, and live.

This milestone also comes shortly after Safaricom reached over 10 million users in Ethiopia, marking a major step in its ambition to become Africa’s leading purpose-driven tech company by 2030.

In the past financial year, the company contributed Sh722 billion to Kenya’s economy and supported over 1.28 million jobs.

Additionally, its community-focused initiatives through the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations have improved the lives of more than 8 million Kenyans by enhancing access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.
