Three Kenyan fishermen, initially reported missing during a fishing expedition plagued by an outboard engine malfunction and a rogue wave, have safely returned home.
Welcomed by Mr. Salim Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy, at Mbaraki Wharf in Mombasa County, they spent 22 days stranded at sea before being rescued by the Chinese fishing vessel Lui Quing Yuan U 108.
Commendations were extended to the Kenya Coast Guard Service personnel and acknowledgment given to the Chinese firm and their local agent for their valuable support.
Embarking on their fishing trip from Malindi in November, the four fishermen faced stormy waters, triggering a search and rescue operation. Coast Guard Director General Mr. Bruno Shioso confirmed the successful rescue on December 24 and emphasized the necessity for bolstered capabilities in maritime law enforcement and search and rescue.
The forthcoming full operation capabilities of the KCSG centre in June 2024 are anticipated to further enhance their capacity.
Expressing gratitude, Mrs. Lilian Mapenzi Karisa, mother of Hanseey Baraka Kilian, thanked the Kenyan government and the master of the Chinese fishing vessel for saving her son from drowning. She also praised Ms. Amina Mnyazi, the Malindi Member of Parliament, for orchestrating their repatriation from the Chinese vessel.
