Kenya on Monday dispatched its first batch of exports to China under the newly introduced zero-tariff agreement, a move officials say could help reduce the trade deficit and open wider markets for Kenyan products.
The shipment includes fresh avocados, avocado oil, hides and skins, coffee, and green beans. These goods will benefit from China’s zero-tariff treatment covering all tariff lines for 53 African countries, Kenya among them, according to the Ministry of Trade.

The consignment was flagged off at the Nairobi SGR Terminus by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, joined by China’s Vice President Han Zheng.
During the ceremony, Kindiki encouraged Kenyan businesses to leverage the preferential access to the Chinese market, home to over 1.4 billion consumers.
“This agreement offers a timely chance for our private sector to expand exports and strengthen Kenya’s presence in China,” he said.
He added that the government would continue using the zero-tariff framework to boost trade relations with China and promote inclusive economic growth through higher exports and value addition.
