President William Ruto on Tuesday officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Usenge Beach Pier project in Siaya County, a major initiative aimed at unlocking the economic potential of Lake Victoria and improving livelihoods in the area.
The pier is part of the government’s wider plan to modernise the blue economy and boost regional trade by upgrading key infrastructure around the lake.

The project is intended to transition local communities from small-scale fishing to a more organised, commercial blue economy.
For many families relying on the lake, the development is expected to bring significant change after years of inadequate infrastructure and logistical hurdles.

With much of Lake Victoria’s potential untapped due to poor landing facilities, the new pier is expected to tackle persistent challenges in the sector.

It will help cut post-harvest losses, enhance fish handling and storage, and improve access to markets.

The facility is also set to position Usenge as a vital hub for cross-border trade, strengthening regional economic ties and creating new opportunities for fishermen, traders and investors.
