Oburu Says ODM Yet to Decide on 2027 Election Strategy

Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has stated that the party has not yet determined whether it will support President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election or run its own candidates.

Speaking at the late Cyrus Jirongo’s home in Lugari, Oburu emphasized that ODM will consult its members before issuing a formal political stance, prioritizing collective decisions over individual preferences.

“I am nothing without you. You are the ones who make me party leader. I cannot claim to know everything, which is why we must consult our people. Once we agree on party policy, everyone must speak with one voice,” Oburu said.

He stressed that the party’s strength comes from unity, not from individual leaders, and highlighted the focus on building a cohesive and robust party ahead of 2027.

“The focus is on the party, not on me personally. We are developing a 10-point agenda to guide us up to 2027,” he added.

Oburu further noted that ODM’s priority is to strengthen the party, expand its membership, attract new supporters, and increase overall backing.

He indicated that the decision on whether ODM will contest independently or enter into a “negotiated arrangement” with the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition will be made closer to the election.

“When 2027 comes, we will either go into the election as ODM on our own or collaborate with others we currently work with in government. Any support will come through a fully negotiated arrangement involving ODM,” he said.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna added that young party leaders are ready to uphold accountability and justice, which he described as central to ODM’s principles.

“I have said before, roads alone do not matter if we live in fear. Justice and freedom are what count,” Sifuna said. “Even if Cyrus has gone quiet, his voice will continue through the pursuit of justice.”

Since the passing of Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025, reports have emerged of internal divisions within ODM.

Some members have pushed for distancing the party from the broad-based government pact struck between the late opposition leader and President Ruto, while others remain loyal to the agreement and have expressed willingness to support Ruto’s re-election in 2027.
