Karungo wa Thang’wa has revealed that hundreds of young Kenyans applied for a single job opportunity in his office, highlighting the severity of youth unemployment in the country.
The senator disclosed that 576 applications were received for one vacancy for a photographer and video editor, a position that attracted massive interest from job seekers across the country.

According to him, the job advert was published on January 25, 2026, and the application window has since closed. Of the applications received, 533 were submitted by men while 43 came from women.
Speaking on March 4, Thang’wa said the overwhelming number of applicants should not be viewed as an achievement but rather as a clear indication of the unemployment crisis affecting young people in Kenya.
Unusual Job Requirements
The vacancy drew significant attention because of its unique and demanding requirements.
The successful candidate would be expected to capture photos and record videos during public events, including situations that may become tense or chaotic.
The advert specifically stated that the candidate should not fear police, teargas, or disorderly environments, and must be able to operate a camera even amid confusion during public activities.
Applicants were also required to remain calm under pressure and meet strict deadlines while documenting unfolding events.
Interestingly, the job listing indicated that prior experience was not mandatory, meaning even individuals willing to learn could still qualify for the role.
Youth Still Applied Despite the Risks
Despite the demanding and potentially risky conditions described in the advert, hundreds of young Kenyans still submitted applications.
Thang’wa said the response shows that the youth are eager to work but lack opportunities.
“Our youth are not afraid and they are not broken. They are simply unemployed and searching for a chance,” he said.
Questions Over Government Youth Programs
The senator used the situation to question the effectiveness of the NYOTA Programme, a national initiative designed to create opportunities for young people.
He argued that if such programs were truly effective, a single entry-level job would not attract hundreds of applicants.
“When 600 young people are competing for one opportunity, it raises serious questions about whether government programs addressing unemployment are actually working,” he said.
Appreciation to Applicants
Thang’wa thanked all 576 applicants for their interest, saying their applications demonstrate the huge pool of talent among Kenya’s youth.
He noted that the submissions would be retained as part of a talent database that could help identify suitable candidates for future opportunities.
“Every application we received reflects the immense potential that exists within our young generation,” the senator added.
He also pledged that his office will continue pushing for policies and initiatives that expand job opportunities for young people across the country.
