How Gen Z Is Forcing the World to Change

By: Ajwang Meresa

As the torchbearers of the future, Gen Zs are leading the charge for change. Born between 1997 and 2012, this generation is driven by a desire for authenticity, sustainability, and social responsibility. They’re not just consumers; they’re conscious citizens who want to make a difference.

From thrifting and upcycling to supporting eco-conscious brands, Gen Zs are redefining the fashion industry. They’re demanding transparency and accountability from brands, prioritizing those that adopt sustainable practices and promote inclusivity. This shift toward sustainable fashion is not just a trend—it’s a movement.

Gen Zs are also championing diversity and inclusivity in all aspects of life. They’re pushing brands to be more representative, challenging traditional norms and stereotypes. This generation values individuality and self-expression, and they’re not afraid to speak out against injustice.

Social media has become a powerful tool for Gen Zs to mobilize and create change. They’re using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat to raise awareness about social and environmental issues, promote activism, and support causes they care about.

In Kenya, for instance, Gen Zs organized a forum via X (formerly Twitter), where they mobilized one another to turn out in large numbers and fight for their rights—a move that demonstrated how organized they are in planning for their future.

In the run-up to and following the October 2025 election in Tanzania, a wave of younger citizens—especially those from the Gen Z cohort—have stepped into the streets and onto social media to demand change. Hundreds of youth-led protests broke out in cities such as Dar es Salaam and Arusha, decrying what they viewed as a “sham election” marked by opposition-party bans, internet blackouts and a dominant ruling party.

These young activists have used hashtags, short video clips and mobilisations—both online and offline—to call for constitutional reform, accountable leadership and youth inclusion in decision-making. Despite curfews, internet shutdowns and a heavy security presence, these Gen Z voices are refusing to go silent and are pressing for their country to be “taken back” with genuine democratic change.

Gen Zs are not passive observers; they’re active participants shaping the world around them. They’re driving conversations about climate change, social justice, and mental health. This generation is committed to creating a better future—and they’re not waiting for anyone’s permission.

Indeed, the youth have taken up the challenge to hold leaders accountable, tirelessly demanding change in how the government operates and insisting on inclusion in decision-making. Through demonstrations and activism, Gen Z voices have been heard, prompting the government to allow more public participation in key decisions.
