Larry Madowo: Why I’m Not Covering Tanzania’s General Elections

CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo has revealed that he is not covering Tanzania’s 2025 General Elections, citing strict restrictions on foreign and independent journalists in the country.

In a video posted on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Madowo explained that Tanzania requires foreign reporters to obtain government approval before they can work within its borders—a process he described as highly restrictive and rarely successful.

“Why am I not covering the elections in Tanzania? It’s simple—Tanzania doesn’t welcome independent, critical reporting,” Madowo said.

He added that the country’s media accreditation procedures make it nearly impossible for foreign correspondents to operate freely.

“To report there legally, I need government accreditation. Historically, Tanzania does not issue such permits to outsiders,” he noted, adding that the situation remains unchanged since the late President John Magufuli’s era.

Madowo further clarified that, although Kenyans can travel to Tanzania without a visa, journalists are still required to obtain media accreditation to work legally.

“Could I enter as a tourist? Yes. But reporting under that status would be illegal and could lead to arrest or deportation,” he explained.

He also voiced concern for local journalists, saying many face harassment and intimidation when covering politically sensitive topics.

“Even Tanzanian journalists struggle to operate freely—they are often threatened and silenced,” he said.

According to Madowo, several international reporters have faced similar hurdles, with many being denied accreditation or left without any response.

His remarks come amid reports of a tense electoral atmosphere in Tanzania, where international observers have raised alarm over limited press freedom and restricted access to information.

Larry Madowo, one of Kenya’s most prominent international journalists, has covered major political events across Africa for CNN, including Kenya’s 2022 General Election. He continues to focus on issues of democracy, governance, and media freedom across the continent.
