Government to Introduce New Roles for Agricultural Society of Kenya

The government has announced plans to assign new responsibilities to the Agricultural Society of Kenya (A.S.K.), including holding quarterly sub-shows nationwide to better support local farmers and their products.

Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr. Kiprono Ronoh, speaking at a two-day farmers’ field event in Eldama Ravine, emphasized that the current yearly A.S.K. shows are not fully optimized to achieve their potential.

He revealed that the government intends to transform A.S.K. shows into agro-cities, where products from different counties will be showcased after each event. This, he explained, will allow investors to identify local products and distinguish exportable goods.

“For example, in Baringo, we could hold quarterly sub-shows in various constituencies, culminating in a final display of all county products at the end of the year,” Dr. Ronoh said.

He also highlighted the importance of holding these shows at the constituency level to educate farmers on best agricultural practices. Dr. Ronoh further urged Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi to establish a permanent facility at the Kabarnet main showground, where products could be stored and accessed by both locals and visitors.

Governor Cheboi welcomed the proposal, acknowledging that such initiatives would help connect farmers to markets and potential business partners. He stressed that promoting these exhibitions could encourage farmers to adopt innovative farming techniques, ultimately boosting the agricultural sector’s growth.

Eldama Ravine Member of Parliament Musa Sirma, who had requested more such events following the successful two-day exhibition, also voiced strong support. He noted that the region is the largest agricultural producer in the county and that increased exposure at these events would help local farmers access global markets.
