AFC Leopards stunned Gor Mahia with a 26th-minute strike from Julius Masaba — a crisp finish that not only settled the derby but also reshaped the league standings.
Gor entered the match as favourites, strengthened by Harambee Stars regulars Byrne Omondi, Sylvester Owino, Michael Kibwage and Austin Odhiambo. Their mission was clear: reclaim top spot from Kakamega Homeboyz. But Leopards, who last beat Gor in 2023, were tactically disciplined and repeatedly shut down Gor’s attacks.

The game began with intensity from both sides. Victor Omune forced Omondi into an early save before Gor responded with sharp exchanges, stopped only by a crucial Randi Bakari intervention.
Masaba’s goal came from Bakari’s delivery—he turned under pressure and placed the ball past the advancing keeper.
“It was instinct,” Masaba said. “The ball fell perfectly, and I hit it first time. We knew we could end their run.”
Gor pushed hard for an equaliser—Kibwage’s header flashed wide and a barrage of corners unsettled Leopards, though none produced a breakthrough. Austin Odhiambo admitted the frustration: “We controlled large spells after halftime, but the finishing let us down.”
Head coach Charles Akonnor said Gor’s problem was not possession but decision-making.
“We dictated phases of play but didn’t turn it into real chances,” he said. “Football punishes wastefulness. Leopards took the one chance they had, and we didn’t.”
He added that Gor lacked sharpness in transition and failed to create overloads in the final third but insisted the setback wasn’t fatal. “We’ll make adjustments. This is a lesson, not a crisis.”
Leopards coach Fred Ambani credited structure and discipline.
“We stuck to the plan,” he said. “Derbies are won by organisation and resilience, not just possession.” He praised his midfield for shielding the backline and limiting Gor’s central entries.
Victor Omune echoed the sentiment: “This boosts our belief. Even under pressure, we stayed calm.”
Akonnor said Gor would not respond emotionally to the defeat. “We’re still in the title race,” he insisted. Ambani, meanwhile, said the victory gives Leopards momentum, adding that consistency will ultimately decide the league.
The result tightens the KPL table significantly. Leopards climb to sixth on 17 points, while Gor remain second on 19 — two behind leaders Kenya Police. With only five points separating the top seven, the derby has thrown the race wide open.
“This title race is a marathon,” Akonnor concluded. “We’ll bounce back.”
Ambani was more upbeat: “This is just the beginning. We’ve set the bar and must keep it.”
Leopards dominated the first half; Gor were stronger in the second, but the single moment of precision proved decisive.
Tensions flared at full time as some Gor fans confronted stewards, forcing police to fire teargas. Smoke drifted onto the pitch, briefly disrupting the post-match atmosphere.
