Three miners lost their lives after a tunnel collapsed at a gold mining site in the Savane area of Kakamega County.

The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, December 6, in Wangoto village. Police said the miners were inside the shaft digging for gold when the walls gave way, trapping them.

Fellow workers tried to rescue them but were unsuccessful, later retrieving the bodies.

The victims were identified as 18-year-old Brytone Wendo, 25-year-old Elvis Shamora and 26-year-old Joseph Amuhaya. Their bodies were taken to the mortuary for post-mortem examinations as investigations continue.

Authorities say this is the latest in a string of fatal accidents reported at gold mining sites in recent months. Similar incidents have been recorded in Siaya, Migori, West Pokot, Moyale, Kakamega, Nandi and Transmara.

Officials warn that many miners operate without protective gear, and investigations have partly linked the recurring tragedies to risky, desperate attempts to extract gold.

The crash comes just days after four people were killed and 25 injured during clashes between residents and government officials at a public participation meeting in Kakamega, leading to the arrest of 56 suspects.

In a separate incident, police in Migori are probing the death of a 16-year-old boy whose body was found in a neighbour’s compound in Got Orango on Sunday. The body had no visible injuries and has been moved to the mortuary for an autopsy.
