Speaking during a Sunday service at the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Diocese in Nyahururu, Laikipia County, Gachagua distanced himself from the violence and destruction seen during the June 25 youth-led demonstrations, particularly in the Mt Kenya region.

“I played no part in the destruction. The government is solely responsible for what unfolded. These accusations are part of a deliberate plot to tarnish my name and that of other leaders, especially in our home regions,” Gachagua said.

His remarks came in response to President William Ruto’s recent suggestion that the protests had elements of a coup attempt.

“There was no coup. What happened was young people rising against injustice and poor governance. The coup narrative is simply a convenient cover to avoid addressing the real grievances raised by the youth,” Gachagua stated, calling the accusations baseless and fabricated.

He further accused the state of using scare tactics instead of engaging in honest dialogue with the Gen Z protesters, whom he described as patriotic citizens demanding accountability.

Gachagua reaffirmed his political resolve, revealing he is working alongside like-minded leaders nationwide to build a movement that seeks to rescue Kenya from what he termed entrenched corruption and poor leadership.

On his social media platforms, Gachagua quoted scripture from Ezra 10:4: “Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”

He accompanied the verse with a message of defiance.

“It’s another blessed Sunday to thank God for His grace upon our country. Kenya must be liberated, and those committed to His will must remain unwavering,” Gachagua posted.

His latest remarks highlight the widening political rift between him and President Ruto, with cracks in the Mt Kenya political arena deepening as the 2027 elections approach.
