Duale: Protest Organisers Must Be Held Accountable for Violent Unrest

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has strongly condemned the violent protests of June 25, insisting that those responsible for the chaos must face justice.

Duale, joining other senior government officials in criticising the demonstrations, called on law enforcement and judicial institutions to act swiftly and decisively.

“The Constitution’s red line was crossed, and those behind the mayhem must be brought to book,” said Duale.

The CS noted that while the protests were initially framed as peaceful, they quickly spiralled into widespread violence, looting, and destruction of property, actions he described as unconstitutional.

“What began as a demonstration ended in disgraceful scenes of lawlessness that stained our nation,” Duale remarked, referencing the attacks on businesses, public institutions, and private property.

While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful, unarmed protest as guaranteed under Article 37, Duale condemned individuals who exploited the demonstrations to commit crimes, including looting, vandalism, and alleged sexual violence.

“Exploiting the right to protest to rape women, destroy livelihoods, and endanger lives is criminal — pure and simple,” he asserted.

He also criticised factions using the protests to challenge the legitimacy of the democratically elected government, warning that such actions are unconstitutional and undermine national stability.

“Our nation is guided by the rule of law and unity under God. Anyone acting contrary to that must be held to account,” Duale stated.

President William Ruto has already directed security chiefs to ensure all those involved in the violence are identified and prosecuted.

“I expect swift, thorough investigations from the Inspector General and all relevant agencies. The culprits must be unmasked and face the full force of the law,” Ruto instructed.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen echoed this stance, promising that the government will pursue those who organised and financed the protests.

“Make no mistake, we will track you down,” Murkomen declared, further pledging to defend police officers facing public backlash over allegations of excessive force.
