Facebook, WhatsApp, X Back Online in Uganda

Uganda has fully reopened access to all social media platforms following the restrictions imposed during the recent elections, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced.

In a Monday tweet, Muhoozi thanked Ugandans for their patience and cooperation during the electoral period, describing the move as a return to normalcy.

“We are restoring all social media today. I thank the great people of Uganda for their support throughout this election season. You give us the courage to serve. God bless you all,” he wrote.

Platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and others had been restricted due to security and public order concerns during the elections.

The shutdown drew criticism from civil society groups, media organisations, and digital rights advocates, who argued it limited freedom of expression and access to information.

Restoring social media is expected to improve communication, revive online business, and allow citizens and media outlets to fully engage digitally after weeks of restrictions.

The Uganda Communications Commission had cut internet services on January 13, just before the national polls, amid opposition claims of electoral irregularities.

With communications limited and results not broadcast live, rights groups criticized the shutdown for undermining transparency and public trust.

Last week, President Yoweri Museveni, 81, was declared the winner of Uganda’s January 15, 2026, election, securing a seventh term in office.

Museveni’s victory reinforces his four-decade-long dominance in Ugandan politics, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His new term will run from 2026 to 2031.

The Electoral Commission announced that Museveni’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) received 7.9 million votes (71.6% of the total), while his main challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, garnered 2.7 million votes.
