US Embassy in Nairobi to Close for Madaraka Day

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has announced that it will temporarily close to the public on Monday, June 1, 2026, in observance of Madaraka Day.

In a statement, the mission said normal operations will resume on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. All routine consular and administrative services will therefore be suspended for the one-day public holiday.

The closure aligns with Kenya’s national celebrations marking Madaraka Day, which will be held this year at the newly built Wajir Stadium in Wajir County. This will be the first time the national event is hosted in the Northern region of the country.

Madaraka Day, observed annually on June 1, is a public holiday in Kenya that commemorates the country’s attainment of internal self-rule in 1963 after years of British colonial rule.

Although Kenya gained self-governance on that date, it became a fully independent republic later on December 12, 1964, which is now marked as Jamhuri Day.

The word “Madaraka” is derived from Swahili, meaning authority or self-rule.
