Eric Omondi: Transforming Lives and Spreading Joy Across Kenya

Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi recently shared insights into his impactful ‘Sisi kwa Sisi’ campaign, aimed at assisting the vulnerable in the country.

During a Tuesday interview with a local media, Eric explained that the inspiration for the campaign stemmed from the current challenging circumstances faced by many in Kenya.

“People are undergoing hardships, struggling to pay rent and school fees. I realized that the most effective way to provide assistance is by uniting as a community,” he expressed.

To ensure direct aid to those in need, Eric highlighted that individuals contribute as little as Sh1, sending their support directly to the beneficiaries. This approach, he explained, avoids any misconceptions about him benefiting financially from the contributions.

Eric emphatically stated that not a single shilling from the donations goes into his pocket. However, he acknowledged that despite the noble cause, he encounters numerous challenges, especially when dealing with cases in remote areas like Wajir.

“Even while assisting in the construction of a bridge in Kisii, we faced scrutiny, with authorities questioning our credentials as contractors,” he recounted.

While the comedian finds solace in helping others, he admitted that the emotional toll can be overwhelming. Handling cases involving vulnerable individuals, especially children in need, has affected him mentally.

“These are experiences I never anticipated in my life, and they emerged suddenly. At times, I find myself needing to take a moment and process everything,” Eric shared.

To cope with the mental strain, Eric has developed his own therapeutic strategies. He emphasized that the messages and images he receives, while often heartbreaking, fuel his commitment to continue the mission.

Choosing which cases to prioritize has been another significant challenge for Eric. He mentioned that the initial approach was first-come, first-served, but he now recognizes the need to address urgent situations promptly.

Acknowledging the overwhelming nature of his responsibilities, Eric highlighted the absence of a team or office to support his efforts. He revealed plans for expansion but noted the ongoing struggle of managing everything alone.

As a family man, Eric emphasized the importance of balancing his time. On days when he is not working, he prioritizes spending quality time with his family. He appreciates the support of his wife, who understands the demands of his work and is comfortable with his occasional travels.

Despite the challenges, Eric sees the ‘Sisi kwa Sisi’ campaign as being in its early stages. He expressed a reluctance to rush into delegating duties to others, emphasizing the need for his family’s involvement in shaping the campaign’s future.

“I feel like we are constructing a new house at the moment, and for a while, my family will be my primary collaborators,” he concluded, noting that sharing his vision might take up to two years.
