Don’t Be Fooled: Uhuru Fires Warning to Voters

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged residents of the Mt Kenya region to stay united and remain alert to political manipulation as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at the burial of former Senator Daniel Karaba in Kirinyaga, Kenyatta warned voters not to be easily influenced by persuasive political rhetoric, noting that some leaders use charm to mislead the public.

“It is good to listen to leaders, but politicians can be very convincing—I warned you about that,” he said, illustrating how persuasive words can sway decisions, even in personal matters.

He encouraged wananchi to elect leaders who are honest and focused on national development, rather than those driven by selfish interests or ethnic divisions.

“Choose leaders who will tell you the truth and guide you well. That is the only way this country will develop,” he said, adding that the public mood he is sensing points to a strong desire for unity.

Kenyatta also criticised some religious leaders, asking them to stay away from partisan politics and instead focus on their spiritual role.

“I respectfully urge you to stop misleading the people. Guide them spiritually and leave political matters to those better suited to handle them,” he said.

He stressed that Kenya’s progress depends on unity and principled leadership, noting that leaders must prioritise serving citizens over personal gain. He cited his past collaboration with Raila Odinga, saying their shared goal was always a united and policy-driven nation free from tribal politics.

“Our country needs unity for peace, stability, and progress. Leaders must serve the people with integrity,” he said.

Addressing the youth, Kenyatta warned against selling their votes, even when offered money.

“You may accept what is given, but never trade your vote or your identity documents,” he advised.

His remarks come amid shifting political alliances both in the Mt Kenya region and across the country, as leaders and voters gear up for the 2027 polls.
