Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party for Development and Democracy, CHADEMA, John Heche was arrested this morning while outside the High Court to attend a case facing him and other party leaders, as well as to monitor the progress of the treason case facing the party’s Chairman, Tundu Lissu.
The Secretary General of the Party for Democracy and Development (CHADEMA), John Mnyika, has claimed that Heche was arrested by the Police this morning as he was arriving at court.
“We have already instructed our lawyers to go directly to the police to follow up on this matter,” said Mnyika.
The police force has not stated the reasons for his arrest.
Heche was arrested last weekend in Mara region on the Tanzania-Kenya border at Isibania One Stop Border while trying to enter Kenya.
According to CHADEMA, Heche was entering Kenya to represent the party at the funeral of Kenyan politician Raila Amolo Odinga.
In addition to detaining him, the party’s statement said that the Tanzania Immigration Authority confiscated his passport.
The Immigration Department said in its statement that Heche left the country by crossing the border and entering a neighboring country without following Immigration procedures and regulations.
It called on Tanzanians and foreigners leaving and entering Tanzania to follow the procedures and regulations governing the entry, residence and exit of people from the country to avoid committing an offense and being subject to legal action.
John Mnyika has said that the Immigration Department’s claim that Heche crossed the border into Kenya illegally is untrue and linked the claim to today’s arrest.
“If his arrest is related to that information, it is very unfortunate that the police used a false immigration report to arrest him. I understand that there was already a conspiracy in the past to find a way to arrest us leaders before October 29th, so various excuses will be used,” said Mnyika.
