Court Orders MP Salasya to Apologise Over Hate Speech Claims

A Nairobi court has directed Mumias East MP Peter Salasya to issue a public apology and participate in a national peace and cohesion campaign as part of a settlement in his ongoing hate speech case.

The ruling was delivered on Monday, January 19, 2026, with the court noting that key conditions of the conciliation agreement with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) had not yet been implemented.

The case stems from statements Salasya allegedly made during political engagements in Meru and Isiolo counties, as well as along the Nanyuki route. The prosecution argued that the remarks amounted to hate speech in violation of the law.

Earlier, the NCIC facilitated dialogue between Salasya and the public to promote reconciliation. Salasya, who denies the charges, is out on a KSh 200,000 cash bail.

During the hearing, Senior Resident Magistrate Paul Mutai noted that while a conciliation agreement had been reached, the MP had not fully complied with its terms. The agreement requires Salasya to hold a joint press conference with the NCIC to publicly apologise and advocate for peace, cohesion, and national integration.

The magistrate stated that the settlement could not be immediately adopted, saying, “I will give you a chance to carry out the agreed actions and provide evidence that they have been done since the accused signed.”

In addition to the press conference, the court ordered Salasya to take part in a social media campaign promoting peace and cohesion across the country. Proof of compliance must be submitted within 14 days.

The NCIC had initially facilitated the conciliation process, but the alternative dispute resolution faced delays due to the expiration of commissioners’ six-year terms on November 17, 2025, which created temporary vacancies within the commission.

The court stressed that full adherence to the settlement’s conditions is essential to ensure accountability, reconciliation, and the success of the peace initiative.
