Ruth Odinga Reveals Why Oburu Odinga Has Travelled to Dubai

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has travelled to Dubai for a brief three-day break after what his family describes as an exhausting stretch of political and personal responsibilities.

His sister, Ruth Odinga, shared the update on Saturday through a social media post, explaining that Oburu needed time to rest after a “hectic and emotionally draining” period.

“ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga has travelled to Dubai for a 3-day rest after an intense political period,” she wrote.

Her message followed Oburu’s own public note a day earlier, in which he expressed gratitude for his health and said he was taking a short break to reflect and recharge.

“Feeling thankful for good health and renewed energy. Taking a brief sabbatical to recollect, recharge, and reset,” he posted.

Oburu has been deeply involved in major national events in recent weeks.

He played a central role in organising the funeral of his younger brother—the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga—who died on October 15. As a senior member of the funeral committee, he oversaw the planning, protocol, and arrangements for Raila’s burial at their family home in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, Siaya County.

In addition, Oburu has remained highly active in ODM affairs.
He chaired and attended several key party activities, including the ODM@20 anniversary celebrations held in Mombasa, which united party officials, delegates, and supporters to mark two decades of the party’s existence.

Most notably, the ODM National Governing Council recently endorsed him as the new party leader—a major milestone that reinforces his long-running influence within Kenya’s politics.

The endorsement comes as ODM restructures and prepares for the 2027 General Election. Oburu has repeatedly downplayed claims of divisions within the party, insisting ODM is strong, united, and focused on revitalising its grassroots network.

Speaking on Wednesday, November 19, he dismissed suggestions that ODM is preparing to remain in opposition, stressing that the party’s goal is to take power.

“Those who wish to break ODM will not succeed under my watch. We will keep the party united and build it stronger ahead of 2027. Whether alone or in partnership with others, we will negotiate from strength,” Oburu said.

“There is no forming a party just to stay in the opposition. I am not leading ODM to opposition—I am leading it to government.”
