The confrontation broke out shortly after Gachagua’s convoy left the airport, when groups of youths—some on motorbikes and others ferried by buses—began hurling stones and attacking vehicles with crude weapons. Several people were injured, and multiple cars were damaged in the chaos.
What was expected to be a celebratory political homecoming for the DCP party leader quickly descended into violence, forcing the cancellation of planned stopovers and a rally at Kamukunji where he was scheduled to address supporters.
Police officers deployed at the scene did little to intervene as the clashes unfolded, leaving supporters and leaders vulnerable. Amid the unrest, Gachagua abandoned his public address, switched cars, and exited the procession, leaving other leaders to calm the crowd.

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina blamed the government, claiming it was using goons to sabotage Gachagua’s homecoming while unjustly targeting innocent youths. Murang’a Senator Kamau Murang’o echoed her sentiments, alleging a plot to block Gachagua’s supporters.

The incident occurred a day after DCP officials warned of threats from Nairobi ODM chairman George Aladwa, who had vowed to counter Gachagua’s supporters.
DCP leaders strongly condemned the violence, describing the attacks as “barbaric.”
