The eagerly awaited Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), originally scheduled to take place in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in February 2025, has been postponed to August 2025 due to delays in infrastructure development.
The tournament, which is meant for players based in their home countries, was initially set for February 1-28, 2025. However, on Tuesday, January 14, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the postponement to allow the host nations additional time to complete the necessary infrastructure and facilities.
A statement from CAF explained that its technical and infrastructure experts, who have been working in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, recommended the delay to ensure the facilities meet the required standards for a successful tournament.
Despite the delay, the tournament’s draw, originally scheduled for Wednesday, January 15 in Nairobi, will proceed as planned.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed gratitude to the leaders of the host countries, stating, “I would like to sincerely thank President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their leadership, dedication, and the considerable progress made in upgrading the necessary infrastructure in the three countries.”
He also praised the ongoing work on the stadiums and other facilities in the host nations, adding that he is confident they will meet CAF’s standards for the tournament in August 2025.
In Kenya, there has been a race against time to finish two of the competition stadiums, Moi International Sports Center Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium. The latest development is a positive sign for Kenya, as construction work on the facilities is still ongoing. At Kasarani, the canopy roof remains incomplete, and Nyayo National Stadium still lacks floodlights.
