Lee Kinyanjui, the nominee for the position of Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade, and Industry, has declared his net worth to be Sh471 million, according to a National Assembly committee.
Kinyanjui, who appeared before the Committee on Appointments led by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula for approval hearings, stated that his shares in family businesses are valued at approximately Sh399 million. Additionally, he owns an apartment worth Sh8 million and has a loan of Sh8 million.
Wetang’ula remarked that, considering Kinyanjui’s background as a former governor, his wealth is “very modest.”
In his closing remarks, Kinyanjui assured Kenyans that, if appointed, he would give his best efforts in leading the ministry. He acknowledged that such opportunities are rare and emphasized that his experience in public office would help him face challenges head-on. “The more challenges there are, the more justification I will have to turn around the tide,” he stated.
Kinyanjui also mentioned he would seek Parliament’s support on legislative matters, highlighting his past collaboration with MPs. He stressed the importance of teamwork for success and committed to doing his best for Kenya.
Regarding his past criticisms of the Kenya Kwanza administration, Kinyanjui defended his stance, calling it “positive criticism.” He clarified that criticizing policies, such as the impact of pending bills on business, was not an attack on the government but a plea for better cash flow management.
Kinyanjui further explained that he had resigned from the Ubuntu People’s Forum immediately upon his nomination. “I have resigned from the Ubuntu party, but my heart remains deeply connected to its philosophy of ‘I am because you are,’” he said.
Kinyanjui had previously contested the Nakuru gubernatorial race under the Jubilee Party but lost to UDA’s Susan Kihika before forming the Ubuntu People’s Forum.
