Kenya’s Gor Mahia, eyeing their 21st FKF Premier League triumph, is gearing up to represent their nation in this prestigious event. Joining them will be premier league champions from the 12 Member Associations, including Zanzibar, alongside guest sides, injecting an extra dose of excitement into the competition, as confirmed by John Auka Gecheo, the CECAFA Executive Director.

Express FC from Uganda clinched victory in the previous edition held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 2021, securing a memorable 1-0 win against guest side Nyasa Big Bullets from Malawi.

Simba SC from Tanzania boasts an impressive record with six CECAFA Kagame Cup titles under their belt, closely trailed by Young Africans SC (Tanzania) and Tusker FC (Kenya), each with five triumphs.

The cancellation of the 2023 edition due to scheduling conflicts with the congested CAF/FIFA calendar left football aficionados yearning for the electrifying action of the Kagame Cup. However, CECAFA’s decision to designate Zanzibar as the host for the 2024 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup has reignited the fervor surrounding regional football events.

The Senior Challenge Cup holds significant importance for Zanzibar, akin to a World Cup, and is poised to elevate the stature of football in the region, potentially bolstering their prospects of qualifying for AFCON.

Furthermore, Zanzibar’s hosting rights for the CAF Africa Schools Football Championship CECAFA Zonal qualifiers underscore its pivotal role as a hub for football development in East and Central Africa.

With additional CECAFA Zonal qualifiers slated across Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, encompassing various age groups and genders, the stage is set for grassroots football to flourish, fostering a new generation of talent across the region.
