WhatsApp Rolls Out Powerful New Scam Alert

WhatsApp has introduced a new security feature aimed at helping users identify suspicious contacts before they open a conversation, as the messaging platform strengthens its efforts to combat scams and impersonation.

The feature, which is being rolled out to Android and iOS users, displays a warning screen whenever someone attempts to start or open a chat with a phone number that is not saved in their contacts.

According to WABetaInfo, the warning appears before the conversation opens, giving users useful information about the unknown contact and allowing them to decide whether the interaction appears genuine.

The update builds on WhatsApp’s existing security tools designed to protect users from fraudsters who rely on social engineering rather than hacking passwords.

Scammers often trick victims into sharing verification codes or approving requests that allow criminals to link another device to their WhatsApp account.

The new feature is designed to interrupt this process by providing an additional layer of protection before users take actions that could compromise their accounts.

WABetaInfo noted that the security warning is displayed just before a verification code or confirmation could give scammers access, making it more difficult for fraudsters to deceive users.

The warning screen also provides key details about unknown contacts, including the country code associated with the phone number and whether the user shares any mutual WhatsApp groups with the sender.

This information is intended to help users assess the legitimacy of unfamiliar contacts before responding.

If a contact appears suspicious, users can immediately block or report the number without opening the chat.

Previously, some of WhatsApp’s safety prompts only appeared after a conversation had already been opened.

By introducing the warning at an earlier stage, the platform aims to give users more time and information to make informed decisions before interacting with unknown contacts.

The feature is gradually rolling out to WhatsApp users on Android and iOS as part of the company’s continued efforts to strengthen user security and reduce online scams.
