Police in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, have intercepted cannabis valued at Sh5 million and apprehended two individuals.
Laikipia County Police Commander John Nyoike confirmed the incident, stating that the shipment of cannabis was en route from Tanzania to an undisclosed location in Meru. The contraband was discovered in a Toyota Fielder with registration number KCZ 858 R during a police operation on Saturday, following a tip-off from the public.
“Our police officers, acting on information from members of the public, were able to make an arrest and seize cannabis being transported to an unknown place in Meru. The police confiscated 50 packages with an estimated street value of Sh5 million,” explained Nyoike.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as David Othiambo, and one other occupant named John Okech, were arrested and taken to Nanyuki police station. They are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday.
Following a search, the police uncovered packages, each containing four dried bales of cannabis sativa. Investigations will continue to determine the intended market for the seized contraband.
Nyoike issued a warning to individuals involved in illegal activities, emphasizing that their activities are being closely monitored, and authorities are determined to dismantle such cartels.
He expressed gratitude to the public for providing credible information that facilitated the arrest of the suspects and the seizure of the cannabis shipment.
