Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. launched the distribution of bursaries totaling Ksh. 85 million to underprivileged students throughout the county yesterday. The bursaries are intended to support 12,682 students enrolled in secondary schools, colleges, the County Technical and Training Institute, and universities.
The official launch of the distribution took place at Matiliku Market in Makueni constituency on Friday, where Mutula released and distributed bursary cheques to beneficiaries across the county. The initiative aims to enable financially disadvantaged students from impoverished backgrounds to access and continue their education despite the high cost of living.
Governor Mutula emphasized the Makueni county government’s commitment to achieving a 100% transition and supporting the access and retention of students in school. He stated that Ksh. 85 million had been allocated for bursaries in the 2024 first term, benefiting students identified through a vetting process by the Ward Bursary Committees based on their vulnerability.
Mutula urged both the National government and the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) to contribute by providing bursaries to alleviate the financial burden on the parents of needy students. He underscored his administration’s dedication to investing in the education of Makueni children to foster their productivity in society. Mutula encouraged students to be obedient to their teachers, emphasizing the importance of following instructions for future leadership roles.
Addressing a group of secondary students benefiting from the bursary program at Matiliku Market, Mutula emphasized the significance of listening to teachers to succeed in leadership roles at a young age.
Ken Malinda, a 4th-year student at Masai Mara University from Ukia ward and an orphan, expressed gratitude for the Ksh. 10,000 bursary, stating that it would significantly support his school fees and help him complete his studies. Malinda, who has relied on bursaries, including those from NGCDF, throughout his university term, appreciated the assistance.
The beneficiaries will receive varying amounts: university students, Ksh. 10,000; college students, Ksh. 8,000; CTTI students, Ksh. 7,000; secondary boarders, Ksh. 7,000; and secondary day scholars, Ksh. 4,000. Mutula also announced that 99 needy but academically promising students would benefit from the Makueni County full scholarship program the following week, extending support to a total of over 600 students in the county.
