At Least 40 People Killed in Sudan Refugee Camp

At least 40 people have been killed in an attack on a camp for displaced people in Sudan’s western Darfur region, according to an aid group working there.

The Emergency Response Unit says Monday’s attack was carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). An opposition committee in the nearby town of el-Fasher, made up of local residents and activists, also reported the incident.

El-Fasher, a town also heavily attacked, is the last holdout in Darfur for the army and its allies, who have been fighting RSF militants in the two-year civil war.

The conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis with the United Nations warning that families stranded in the besieged city are facing starvation.

The local aid group Abu Shouk, where about 200,000 people live, said some of those killed in the attack were shot in their homes while others were shot in public.

A US-based organization that analyzes satellite images and video says a large group of 40 vehicles was seen in the northwestern suburbs of the camp, a report confirming the attack came from the north.

RSF has been widely accused of ethnic cleansing in Darfur during this conflict. RSF has denied the allegations.

IDP camps near El-Fasher have often been attacked during the war.

In April, more than 100 people died and thousands fled the Zamzam camp when RSF occupied and took over.

Since the conflict began in April 2023, thousands of people have died, 12 million have been forced to flee their homes and famine has been declared in parts of the country.
