The incident occurred on Friday during heavy rains near the KMC Bridge.

Authorities confirmed that Paul Gitonga, the driver of a vehicle caught in the floods, was found on Sunday several kilometers away in the Lowangishu area. Efforts are still ongoing to locate another man believed to have been swept away during the same event.

The floods severely affected the Soko Mjinga and Safi Estate areas, prompting evacuation and relief efforts by emergency teams.

The vehicle, which was owned by a local Member of County Assembly (MCA), was headed to Isiolo when it was carried away by the waters. According to police spokesperson Michael Muchiri, the incident took place as the vehicle attempted to cross the flooded KMC Bridge, near a police station in Isiolo. It was later discovered nearly two kilometers downstream, heavily damaged.

In Safi Estate, several residents trapped by rising waters were successfully rescued and moved to safer locations.

Authorities are currently assessing the impact of the floods, including livestock losses and property damage.

With rains persisting, emergency teams remain on high alert. Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo said the floods have caused significant destruction, displacing many families and disrupting lives across the region.

“The County Government is fully committed to supporting affected residents. Emergency teams are actively rescuing stranded individuals, relocating families, and delivering food and other supplies. We urge residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines,” said the governor.

He added that plans are underway to provide temporary shelters, healthcare, food assistance, and to restore damaged infrastructure.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast continued showers and thunderstorms across the northeastern counties, including Isiolo, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa, for the remainder of the weekend.
