Aga Khan, Spiritual Leader and Philanthropist, Passes Away at 88

Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, has passed away at the age of 88.

He died peacefully in Lisbon last night, surrounded by family, as confirmed by the Aga Khan Development Network.

In addition to his spiritual leadership, he was a philanthropist and a key figure in global development. In Kenya and across Africa, he established institutions like the Aga Khan Hospital and University, Nation Media Group, and Serena Hotels, among other initiatives that employ thousands of people.

His work spanned sectors such as healthcare, education, and economic development both in Africa and globally.

A British citizen, Aga Khan IV led the Ismaili Muslim community, which has around 15 million followers worldwide. He inherited the position from his grandfather in 1957 when he was only 20 and was greatly admired by his followers as a source of life.

The Aga Khan Foundation has announced that details regarding his successor will be revealed later.
