Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today presided over the official launch of the Evidence to Policy for Kenya Care Economy Project in Kitui Town.

The project, implemented by Anglican Development Services Eastern (ADSE) in partnership with UN Women, aims to promote gender-responsive care policies and services in Kitui County.

The initiative, the second of its kind in both Kenya and Africa, seeks to address the unequal burden of unpaid care work predominantly shouldered by women. It will be rolled out in Kauwi, Mutomo, and Athi wards, focusing on empowering women and girls through policies that recognize, reduce, and redistribute unpaid care work.

Speaking during the event, Governor Malombe commended UN Women and ADSE for their commitment to advancing gender equality and improving the lives of women and girls in Kitui. “The care economy is a critical pillar of social and economic development. My administration fully supports this initiative as it aligns with our vision of creating inclusive and equitable opportunities for all,” he stated.

Earlier in the day, the UN Women and ADSE teams paid a courtesy call on Governor Malombe at his office. During the meeting, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the project’s implementation and ensuring that gender-responsive care services are prioritized in county development plans.
The launch event also aimed to raise awareness about the care economy, promote a deeper understanding of its importance, and encourage key stakeholders to commit to the National Care Policy. Additionally, it provided a platform for fostering dialogue on sustainable and equitable care solutions that can be integrated into both local and national development agendas.
With this project, Kitui County takes a significant step forward in championing gender equality and creating an environment where the contributions of caregivers, particularly women, are recognized, supported, and valued.
