BBC to Close TV Channels as Financial Crisis Deepens

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is set to shut down its BBC Three and BBC Scotland television channels in spring as part of a major cost-cutting plan aimed at saving £500 million (approximately KSh87 billion) over two years.

Under the changes, both channels will transition to online-only platforms, with selected programmes continuing to be available through BBC iPlayer. The move will eliminate the need to maintain traditional television broadcast schedules.

The broadcaster has also announced plans to close Radio 4 Extra, a station known for airing archived BBC content, including comedy, drama and documentaries.

BBC Director-General Matt Brittin said the corporation needed to maximise the value of its resources while responding to financial challenges and adapting to changing audience habits.

He acknowledged that the decisions would be difficult for both viewers and employees but maintained that much of the existing content would remain accessible through BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

“Much of the great content they currently carry will still be found where audiences already enjoy it on iPlayer and Sounds,” Brittin said.

What happens to BBC Three and BBC Scotland?

BBC Three primarily targets younger audiences and has been responsible for launching popular programmes such as Fleabag, Normal People and Gavin & Stacey.

The channel initially moved to an online-only format in 2016 before returning to traditional television broadcasting in 2022.

BBC Scotland, launched in 2019, provides a range of Scottish-focused programming, including news, sports, documentaries and entertainment.

However, several programmes aired on the two channels are repeats of content previously broadcast on other BBC networks. These include Two Doors Down on BBC Scotland and Sort Your Life Out on BBC Three.

Both channels currently broadcast television programmes mainly during evening hours. Outside these periods, BBC Scotland simulcasts BBC Radio Scotland.

The closure will also affect Reporting Scotland: News at Seven, which will not transfer to BBC iPlayer and is expected to end when the linear channel shuts down.

Nevertheless, the BBC says audiences will continue accessing other Scottish news and current affairs programmes, including Reporting Scotland, The Sunday Show, Radio Scotland Breakfast, Debate Night and Scotcast.

Radio 4 Extra will also be discontinued, although much of its archive programming is already available on BBC Sounds.

Industry reacts to BBC restructuring

Former ITV chairman and Endemol production company executive Sir Peter Bazalgette described the proposed changes as a measured approach to reducing costs.

He argued that the strategy prioritises spending on content while cutting expenses associated with programme distribution, adding that the BBC had experienced a significant decline in revenue over the past decade.

However, entertainment trade union Equity expressed concern over the announcement, saying the changes raised questions about the BBC’s financial health and its ability to fulfil its public service broadcasting responsibilities.

Affected employees were informed of the proposed changes on Tuesday, following media reports in recent weeks suggesting that the two television channels could be closed.

BBC plans up to 2,000 job cuts

The closures form part of a wider restructuring programme intended to save £500 million over two years amid what the corporation describes as significant financial pressures.

The BBC is targeting between 1,800 and 2,000 job reductions, representing almost one in every 10 positions.

The broadcaster has already announced approximately 550 job cuts within its news division, while more than 30 reductions have been announced at BBC Sport.

BBC News Director Rachel Jupp also announced proposals for an additional £5.5 million in savings, which could result in around 100 roles being eliminated.

The financial squeeze has also affected the BBC’s entertainment programming, with several well-known shows recently cancelled or temporarily suspended.

Programmes dropped include RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind, Live at the Apollo, Football Focus and Ski Sunday. Other shows, including DIY SOS, have been temporarily rested.

The restructuring signals a broader shift towards digital platforms as the BBC seeks to reduce operating costs while adapting to changing viewing and listening habits.
