Who Was Wafula Chebukati?

Wafula Chebukati, the former chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has passed away.

Chebukati had been receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital for almost a week, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. The specifics of his illness have not been disclosed. Family sources revealed that he had been initially treated at home before his condition worsened, prompting his hospitalization.

Born on December 22, 1961, Chebukati served as the IEBC chair from January 2017 to January 18, 2023, overseeing three major Kenyan elections: the 2017 general election, the 2017 repeat presidential election, and the 2022 general election.

With 37 years of legal experience, he ran his own law firm for two decades. In 2006, he established Cootow & Associate Advocates, a Nairobi-based law firm, which he resigned from in January 2017 before assuming his IEBC role. He specialized in corporate law, commercial law, corporate governance, and dispute resolution.

Chebukati was also politically active as a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, from which he resigned when he applied for the IEBC chairmanship. He contested the Saboti Constituency parliamentary seat in 2007, finishing second.

In recognition of his contributions, President William Ruto awarded him the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), Kenya’s second-highest civilian honor.

Chebukati attended Lenana High School and earned a Bachelor of Law from the University of Nairobi. He also held a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law and an MBA from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He was a member of the Law Society of Kenya, the Institute of Certified Secretaries, and the International Commission of Jurists.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, whom he married in 1990, and their three children—one daughter and two sons.
